Brabantia teams up with charity WeForest to plant half a million trees

The Dutch homewares brand is planting one tree for every rotary dryer it sells. So give up the energy guzzling tumble dryer and let wind and sun dry your clothes.

#lovenature campaign will raise money for tree planting in Africa

Brabantia wants to plant 500,000 trees in the poorest, dryest countries in Africa and is donating one tree for every one of its rotary dryers sold. It's working with charity WeForest, which is focusing on countries such as Burkina Faso

Brabantia has joined forces with international non-profit-making organisation WeForest to plant half a million trees in the poorest countries of Africa.

Brabantia is giving funds to buy one tree each time one of its rotary dryers is sold. The company says while it clearly benefits from people buying its product, it is far better for the environment if people stop using tumble dryers - which consume more energy than almost any other household appliance - and let their clothes dry naturally.

Tijn van Elderen, Brabantia's CEO, says drying laundry naturally is kinder to nature: 'It's gentler on your clothes, it saves money and energy and is one of those small things you can do at home to make a difference.'

He says the company admires the work done by WeForest, which wants to use trees to cool the climate in parts of the world where temperatures are rising.

Marie-Noelle Keijzer, CEO of WeForest, says people are encouraged to buy products for themselves if they know there's a wider benefit. 'And for us, planting a tree for everything we do, for everything we consume, will enable us to make the earth cooler.'

WeForest's work in the Sahel, in northeast Burkina Faso, involves replanting native forest to reverse the decline in biodiversity.

The objectives are to:

•    Support biodiversity of both plant and animal species
•    Restore the local water cycle and bring clouds back to the region
•    Develop local awareness of sustainable use and management of natural resources
•    Promote the local economy while focusing on women’s financial empowerment and children’s education.

Brabantia products are widely available at department stores including John Lewis, and online.
